D H Lawrence Festival 2022:
During this year’s DH Lawrence Festival, we have two days that are significant to our community and heritage. On Thursday 8th September, following a day of events through ‘open church’ at St Mary’s Greasley, an extraordinary evening at Beauvale Priory will take place. At 7pm Rolf Pentzlin will explain who the Carthusian monks were, how they shaped that foundation and their relevance today. This will be followed by Malcolm Gray’s referral to DH Lawrence’s description of the ruins in his short novel, ‘A fragment of stained glass’. Weather permitting, the evening will conclude with a very special compline (Night Prayer) in the ruins of the old Priory church.
Friday 9th September begins with a Festival Organ Mass, given by Alan Wilson, along with reflections on our saints; John Houghton and Robert Lawrence. The climax of the two days will be a concert in Our Lady’s church given in memory of Canon John Berry, beginning at 7.30pm. This event, performed by Alan and his musicians, will not only recall Canon John’s deep love of music, but will be a heartfelt thanksgiving for his ministry, not only in our church but to Eastwood at large. Refreshments in the parish social centre afterwards. Please join us for these events. Put the times and dates in the diary!
